Garfield Elementary School is one of the largest and oldest Elementary Schools in Oakland, located in the San Antonio District. It has been in existence circa 1928 and was named after the 20th President, James A. Garfield. He was the president, from March 4, 1881, until September 19, 1881.

We are proud to be the most diverse public elementary school in Alameda County with over 80 languages spoken by our students. We have been recognized by US News and World Report for being one of America’s Best Schools every year since 2010.
Garfield was also ranked #1 Public Elementary School in California according to Niche, which surveyed thousands of parents across the Golden State on what they think makes a great education. Our teachers have created this community that is welcoming to all learners who want to learn, grow, thrive, and engage with one another.
Our best school motto is to take all kinds of people to make up a community so we offer enrichment programs for students who want to explore different interests outside of school hours or j and excel in it. Some of these include the Putonghua / Mandarin Chinese Language Program, Computer Club, Cooking Club, Martial Arts Club, Dance Program, Orchestra Program, and more.
We are proud that 100% of our Kindergarteners met their Developmental Milestones last year. We also believe that reading is fundamental to success in life so we offered a summer literacy program where children read books over the summer break. Our kids love school here because they get this kind of extra help when needed plus they develop friendships with each other along the way too.
