City Pulse Acupuncture just moved to a beautiful new space on Grand Avenue. Rachel Hemphill is the owner.
Lisa: You are a second-generation Oakland resident and business owner?
Rachel: Correct, yes. My grandparents had a couple of grocery stores in Oakland, and my Grandpa also had a real estate brokerage on Lakeshore.
Lisa: You just had a big grand opening?
Rachel: Yeah. So, I had the unique privilege of designing the space with an architect. It’s a clinic designed with feng shui principles, and I had a grand opening with the traditional lion dance. That serves as a blessing for the space to bring wealth and prosperity.
Lisa: Tell me about the business that you created here at City Pulse Acupuncture
Rachel: So City Pulse Acupuncture is an integrative acupuncture and wellness clinic that specializes in fertility, women’s health, and prenatal care.
Lisa: How did you decide to specialize in fertility?
Rachel: It’s a great question. I feel like it’s somethng that actually chose me. When I was in acupuncture school, I interned with a woman who was very, very famous for treating fertility in the city, and the rest is really history.
I have a wall of pictures of all of my patients who have had children because of acupuncture and Chinese medicine. So, I’ve been in practice for 14 years, and I try not to count. I always want to be humble about this because it’s not about me. It’s a testament to the power of the medicine. But by the end of the year, we should hit a thousand babies.
Lisa: How did you get interested in Chinese medicine?
Rachel: So, I’ve always been interested in Chinese medicine. I grew up with a grandmother who would make traditional soups, depending on the season, whether it was wintermelon for winter and supporting coughs and phlegm. I also had a great aunt in China who was an acupuncture anesthesiologist.
Lisa: So aside from people looking for fertility help, who else do you treat?
Rachel: I also have an additional specialization in cosmetic acupuncture. So, anybody who’s looking to improve their skin, whether it’s collagen induction to work on fine lines, anti-aging, or even just sagging, or just wanting to look and feel better and just have a natural glow with something other than Botox or fillers.
Lisa: Rachel, thank you for talking to me.
