Worthy, a new self care studio in Elmwood, focuses on healing your body and mind by dealing with stress.
What is Worthy?
Worthy is a new concept. It’s a self care studio rooted in nervous system down regulation. They offer several unique services designed to help your body process and deal with stress. The goal is to build resiliency over time.
Founder Meliza Mokrani says Worthy is a culmination of the work she did to address her own issues. “I thought up Worthy while I was doing some trauma work,” Meliza said while giving me a tour of her new studio. “Addressing some of the triggers that I had. Really going deep with myself. With the help of a doctor and a therapist and a bunch of amazing practitioners, realizing that I was in a state of hyper-arousal in my sympathetic nervous system. Constantly being in fight or flight, so that I was pouring from an empty cup all the time.”
Meliza leaned into the tool kit she developed as an athlete, using some of the same strategies to recover from the physical demands of basketball. Thanks to her new practice, Meliza found ways to build stress-resilience. Now, when faced with stress she can respond with abundance instead of being triggered and spiraling.
What services does Worthy Self Care offer?
Infrared saunas are one of the “hottest” new therapies. By directly heating your body, rather than the air around you, it raises your core body temperature and produces a deep, detoxifying sweat. Meliza says one session can actually burn up to 600 calories. Other benefits include reducing inflammation, better sleep, better libido, athletic recovery and clarity of thought.
Cold-Plunging, or cold-water immersion, has quickly become popular. The release of hormones and endorphins acts as an analgesic, relieving inflammation and pain. But it can be daunting. That’s why Worthy offers a cold coach, providing a unique, safe, and convenient way to enjoy the benefits of cold therapy.
Each session starts with a somatic body scan and breathwork to help down regulate the nervous system before and during the plunge. Once in the water, the cold coach guides you through breathing and posture to ensure the best possible experience.
Red Light Therapy
A combination of red and infraed light helps penetrate deep into the skin to treat a variety of skin conditions, ranging from wrinkles and age spots to psoriasis, rosacea and eczema. This therapy is FDA cleared and has been shown to be safe and effective in clinical trials.
Lymphatic Compression Massage Therapy
Lymphatic drainage massage was originally developed to relieve painful swelling from medical treatments or illnesses that block your lymphatic system. “Your lymph system is the foundation of your immune system,” Meliza told me. “Unfortunately, it does not have a pump. It relies on voluntary or involutary muscle contraction. Voluntary through exercise, involuntary through massage. It’s a great way to flush toxins out of the system, helping with water weight and muscle recovery.” Meliza also added it is an FDA cleared device and is eliglible for FSA and HSA reimbursement.
NuCalm is based on neurofeedback, using brainwaves to help regulate mood and stress. It works by sending calming signals to the brain through headphones, which can help reduce anxiety. NuCalm is also unique in that it does not require you to focus on your breathing. Instead, you can relax and let your mind drift.
Why did the community need this?
Worthy is modeled after the hammam, which is the bathhouse common in Africa, Middle East, Turkey and throughout the Mediterranean. It was a practice her parents’ generation did weekly.
One of the main tenets of Worthy is that everyone is worthy of experiencing wellness , which is a personal journey for Meliza. She says she watched her mom be marginalized as an immigrant and the recipient of a lot of social services that she doesn’t think had her humanity in mind. So Meliza created a space where everyone is welcome. Memberships are based on a sliding scale so no matter what your income might be, it is affordable for everyone.
