Shakewell’s co-owner shows us how to make their newest cocktail
Hey, Melanie!
One of my favorite restaurants in Oakland is Shakewell on Lakeshore Ave. I love Chef Jen Biesty’s seafood paella and my kids are obsessed with the chicken and churros, Shakewell’s take on chicken and waffles. As good as their food is, Shakewell is also known for creating some of the best hand crafted cocktails in the East Bay. So when I heard about their new cocktail, using fresh cantaloupe, I had to try it and it was amazing. So amazing, I wanted to learn how to make it.
Shakewell co-owner Tim Nugent.
Luckily, Tim Nugent, Shakewell’s general manager and co-owner, was kind enough to invite me down and show me how they came up with the refreshing recipe they call Hey, Melanie!
The Recipe
This hand crafted cocktail starts with 2 ounces of cantaloupe syrup, which they extract from locally sourced, farm fresh melon. Then, about ¾ ounce of lemon juice. Followed by a generous pour of a 50/50 mix of Aperol and Neft Vodka, an award winning spirit with an eye-catching container. Shakewell specifically chose this vodka because of their generous support of local LBGTQ+ centers.
Hey, Melanie! Shakewell’s newest cocktail
If you want to skip the liquor, Hey, Melanie! can also be made as an aqua fresca. Either way, Shakewell’s Hey, Melanie! is the perfect warm weather drink!
