Local with Lisa: Piedmont Eagles Nest

Local with Lisa Lisa Chan Carnazzo June 19, 2025

Lisa: The bird watchers are out in full force near Moraga and Monte in Piedmont because a pair of bald eagles has made their nest high up in an eucalyptus tree in Mountain View Cemetery. Let’s go take a look.

This is the hottest spot in town lately. Especially in the late afternoon, you’ll see crowds flocking to catch a glimpse of 2 adult bald eagles and their two eaglets.

Passerby: "A nest with what? Bald eagles. Bald eagles?"

Travis Hails says he’s been a birder for 40 years. He says it’s unusual for birders to reveal raptor nesting sites.

Travis Hails: “Usually, birders don’t post raptors, where they are, they post woodpeckers, but not raptors because people go into the nest and steal them.”

Hails was graciously sharing his telescope with fellow eagle fans.

Travis Hails: “They’re neat, it used to be you didn’t see bald eagles at all in this area.”

Lisa: Now they're becoming more common. Hails says there are even other nests nearby. Experts believe the increase in sightings is thanks to cleaner Bay Area air and a wet winter that filled up reservoirs, prime fishing grounds for bald eagles.
