Local with Lisa: Tea on Piedmont

Local with Lisa Lisa Chan Carnazzo November 29, 2022

Tea on Piedmont is new to Piedmont Avenue. From tea lattes to boba I promise you have never had tea like this before. Grace Shen is the owner.

How did you decide to open Tea on Piedmont, you said it was a spontaneous decision?

I was checking out the space for fun and it is so pretty and so bright. Also, it looks like a warm and welcoming neighborhood.

How do you know so much about tea?

I grew up in Taiwan. I drank tea with my Grandpa when I was very young. Obviously they didn’t know how caffeine is going to affect kids. Tea is interesting, every country and every culture drinks tea in a completely different way.

You are so passionate about tea you opened a tea shop?

For tea drinkers we go to coffee shops and order tea that isn’t their area of expertise. I feel like there should be a tea cafe that actually has quality tea drinks or tea lattes. Everyone can find their own cup of tea here.

Where do you get the tea for your tea drinks?

My matcha is from Asha, Asha is a local business. All my other teas I source from different places. My black tea, my oolong, is from Taiwan. It’s my friend’s family owned business. I found the hojicha for my hojicha latte. I tried so much hojicha and this is the hojicha I liked, so I only bought this tea farm’s hojicha because it tastes so good.

If someone comes to Tea on Piedmont for the first time what should they order?

I’m very proud of our hojicha, it’s earthy, we brew it with oat milk, it’s very friendly and makes people feel like this is a good drink. We have a couple unique creations, like we use Taiwanese oolong with macadamia milk.

Tea on Piedmont features a lot of other local businesses and you host pop ups?

There was a hashtag that small businesses help each other so I tried to find those tea lovers that have their own small business and try to feature them because those small businesses can’t go into Whole Foods but people need to have a place to show it.
