Local with Lisa Lisa Chan Carnazzo January 20, 2026
Lisa: Sam Breach got into pet photography when a friend with a 20-year-old cat couldn’t find a photographer willing to work with cats.
Sam: So she asked me, knowing I was a photographer and friend, if I could do it. I wasn’t sure if I could, but I said yes, let’s try. But then I got really into it so that’s how I got into pet photography.
Lisa: She got so into it she opened a studio space for dogs.
Sam: I was originally working at home but I have cats but I really wanted to shoot dogs as well. Obviously, you can’t bring a strange dog into a home with a domestic pet, a cat. So I found this studio. It's less than a mile from my home and it’s perfect for dogs, people, anybody.
Lisa: Sam says working with animals brings a sense of calm.
Sam: They’re always happy and they don’t care how they look. So they’re a treasure to work with. With the cats, I take the studio, I’ve got a studio that is portable and I can take into people’s homes because cats aren’t too keen on going to strange places. So this place is more for the dogs.
Lisa: Before every shoot, Sam meets the pets in their home to get to know them and their owners.
Sam: I get to talk to the owners, then I learn about that particular pet and what they like to do. I also learn about the aesthetic tastes of the owners. Do they like modern, do they like something more traditional, classic art type, and once I understand that and the color of their eyes and coats then we can work on backgrounds and all that kind of thought process goes into what we finally decide for the particular animal.
Lisa: And Sam doesn’t just photograph animals….
Sam: I actually do people as well. I started being a photographer well over a decade ago, and I started off with people portraits, so I do business portraits, business branding, conceptual individual personal portraits, editorial style, that kind of thing.
Lisa: Whether she’s photographing pets or people, Sam focuses on creating a highly personalized, carefully crafted experience.
Sam: I get very involved in getting to know the customer so we can create a special, magical story. I’m not a photographer who just goes out and says you have an hour in the woods, let's see what we can shoot. Everything is super intentional, well-thought-out, and planned, so we get something unique and totally special.
