Local with Lisa: Spring Soirée

Local with Lisa Lisa Chan Carnazzo April 3, 2025

Lisa: The Cancer League’s Spring Soirée will be held at Trader Vic’s in Emeryville

Every dollar raised will go toward early-stage cancer research.  Let’s learn more about it together.

An evening of island-inspired elegance, fine shopping, and a mission to make a difference, Trader Vic’s will become a vibrant marketplace for The Cancer League’s Spring Soiree.

Jenna Caldwell: We’re now in our 52nd year, and our mission is to raise funds and support local Bay Area nonprofits in cancer research, education, and patient services.

Jenna Caldwell, President of the Cancer League, felt a personal calling to give back after experiencing the devastating effects of cancer firsthand.

Jenna Caldwell: I sadly lost my mom to stage 4 ovarian cancer, and nowadays, everyone has a cancer story.  Whether it’s personal, a friend, a colleague, a next door neighbor, whoever it is.

Lisa: Since its inception, The Cancer League has donated over 7 million dollars, providing essential funding for scientists at leading research institutions.

Jenna Caldwell: It would take more time and energy for doctors to find where to get this money, and we’ve built relationships with local research facilities, such as UCSF, Stanford, John Muir Health, and Bay Area Institute, over the years.

Lisa: The Cancer League has also built a relationship with Trader Vic’s and has hosted events here since the 1970s.

Jahn Whitelocke, Assistant Banquet Manager says Trader Vic’s has been a part of the community for a long time. We just celebrated our 90th anniversary. We started as a small bar and restaurant called Hinky Dinks here in Oakland on San Pablo Avenue in 1934.

We have 25 locations in 11 different countries, and we’re still family-owned. We’re the originator of the world-famous Mai Tai, which was recently named the official drink of Oakland.

Lisa: Beneath the glow of tiki torches and the scent of Polynesian flavors, guests will sip, shop, dine, and support a lifesaving cause.
