Local with Lisa: Spring Fling

Local with Lisa Lisa Chan Carnazzo April 27, 2023

Spring Fling is the largest fundraiser for Piedmont’s three elementary schools. The goal this year is to raise $300,000.

Keep the Library Open!

Ellora is a fourth grader at Piedmont’s Beach Elementary School. When she found out the library might close during lunchtime, she started a petition to keep it open. “I just felt sad about it because I know how many people like going to the library.”

Many fourth graders signed it, like Zoe. “Well, I just like coming here and being able to check out books or just read here any time,” she said. It’s a nice place, especially when it’s really cold outside and in here it’s all toasty and warm.

Piedmont Spring Fling fundraisers hope to keep Beach Elementary School library open during lunch.

Acadia, another 4th grader signed it too. “I just feel like sometimes when I’m having trouble with my friends or I feel sad I come here to feel better. Like I can just go in and read my favorite books and it just feels really safe.

What Spring Fling Funds

The money from Spring Fling funds the extras, because of changes made in the state budget, the Piedmont Unified School District is faced with unexpected cuts and needs help filling the gap.

I spoke with Amelie Kappes, the board chair for PEF. “The main cuts are going to be the lunchtime library, the para-educators on the playground during recess, and also cuts to our mental health counseling services provided to our students in elementary school.”

Keep the Counselors

Havens second graders Alice & Millie say they depend on having counselors always available. “It really helped me and Alice because we were in this big fight,” said Millie. “But then the counselor got us back together.”

The girls say it’s hard knowing those counselors might not be there when problems arise. “I’m sad because if your friends help you, it’s not the same. The counselor knows more.”

Piedmont Spring Fling fundraisers hope to keep Havens Elementary School counselors on site during school hours.

All the money raised will go directly to the three elementary schools and every dollar makes a difference.
